Amelia Coward

Amelia Coward is a contemporary painter and collage artist who has exhibited mostly in the United Kingdom as well as in the United States and Germany. Her work has been featured several times at The Other Art Fair hosted by Saatchi Art as well as being featured in their collections. Notable exhibitions include participation at the prestigious Saatchi Gallery in London as well as dual solo exhibition features at Whitstable Gallery. Amelia’s art remains in the collection of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in London and she has participated in 20 exhibitions to date since 2014.

With a background in textiles and design, Amelia invokes patterned works of art using either striped paintings and pointillism-inspired dot collages. The works often contain neon colors and pastel hues creating intricate formations and illusory markings which give off a sense of almost holographic effects and motion. Amelia creates her dot collages from pieces of maps and vintage books producing a detailed surface upon closer inspection. The stripe series, although fewer in number, remains as equally fascinating in regards to the intricate detailed genesis with incorporation of advanced color theory. These motion-inducing and illusory abstractions create heightened stimulation towards color relationships of imaginative and contemporary manufactured colors. Sophistication in the patterned design remains apparent with the hyper attention to spatial detail in the creation of works which create a uniformed and hallucinogenic manipulation of the eye.

Ohio Stripe Colour (pictured above) remains a painting with retro 1980’s New Wave aesthetics much like the rest of the Stripe series. The color palette within the painting may be reminiscent of MTV New Wave music video color schematic scenes during the 1980’s or even videos from 1990’s Eurodance scenery or nightclub settings. With a vintage finish the paintings create lively and energetic stimulation instilling a heightened sense of awareness. Although the paintings remain flat the lucid color combinations reflect vertical motion as if driving through a futuristic tunnel with flashing glares of sunlight pressed upon the viewer’s eyes.

Amelia Coward creates dynamic two-dimensional works which offer reflections and new interpretations in regards to pointillism and color field painting. In addition, her heightened sense of design principles offer a unique perspective in the role of pattern-making in contemporary art. These energized, bright compositions reach beyond their flat application and create allusions towards retro and holographic aesthetics. Amelia remains a sophisticated colorist who challenges the viewer to reflect on the extremes of color manipulation.
