Flavia Lovatelli

Flavia Lovatelli is an ecological installation artist and sculptor who has exhibited extensively in North and South Carolina. Recent exhibitions in the Carolinas include galleries such as Dalton Gallery in Rock Hill, Cain Art Center in Cornelius, York County Arts Center, Park Circle Gallery and City Gallery in Charleston and Charleston Cultural Arts. Flavia has a number of public art installations in the Carolinas and she has been published by Canvas Rebel Magazine, ArtFields Catalogue, Passe Partout Magazine, Art Folio book, Salann Magazine, and Creative Quarterly.

The various sculptures and installations by Flavia are all created by organic and reclaimed, salvaged materials and are typically made with paper such as recycled magazines, old books, and junkmail. Her goal remains to repurpose non-biodegradable waste into art, such as plastic. Flavia feels her work’s objective remains to repurpose objects, what would otherwise be in a landfill, into priceless works of art to make a statement about the importance of reclamation on ecology.

Resembling fauna, flora, and coral, these naturalistic abstractions contained within the sculptures and installations reveal sensual curvature reflecting natural inclinations. The various works may resemble sea urchins, trees, foliage, crustaceans, and other forms of biological life. Conceptually, the pieces reflect a oneness in nature not only in representation but also in material and process. The works may sometimes resemble fiber in their state, even though they are not, due to their similarity to various forms of attire, one sculpture even resembles the outline of a skirt. Metaphorically, these works reflect a deep sense on the reflections of human impact, interpreting a relationship between human-created structures and natural organisms.

Change (pictured above) remains one of Flavia’s most recent installations. The piece fills up an entire room reflecting the need for society to prioritize the sustainability of the environment. With depictions of coral and marine life, Flavia addresses plastic and hazardous pollution in the ocean. The installation resembles a sense of chaos in form, representing the destructive nature of human impact on natural environments.

Flavia Lovatelli depicts the dark art of portraying the lack of sustainability through the consequences of industrialization. Although the themes convey a sense of urgency, her beautiful organic forms communicate a feeling of rejuvenation and metamorphosis towards representing biological beauty to reflect the importance of nature. A deeply philosophical artist who cares deeply about the environment, Flavia addresses the societal need for sustainability through art which remains symbolically representational of the importance of reclamation and sustainable processes.
