For the purposes of the article we will be focusing on Luciano’s prints and paintings. The digital prints which appear like silkscreen printmaking due to the textural application, contain portraits of vogueish women portrayed in a variety of colors. These vibrant works explore elements of design by breaking down three-dimensionality into linearity and flat shapes reminiscent of color field painting.
Stylish and confident, the women portrayed have their facial anatomy and attire accentuated with color and tone. Luciano breaks down the composition and even portions of the anatomy into patterns, lines, and shapes of bright, vibrant colors. The pop art aesthetics invoke serene as well as a loud presence as these figures dominate the space, on and off the surface. Luciano explores facial psychology with various expressions of the face as well as by using strategic colors and shapes to depict particular moods. Such as warm colors and curvature to elicit sensuality and cool colors and angularity to convey fashion and style. These fashionable women know they look good and project confidence through their sophisticated application and representation.
Blank # 3 (pictured above) remains one of Luciano’s most minimalistic works. The figure’s attire becomes represented by pure geometry and her face contains incomplete lines. There contains design elements by the subject's head followed by vast portions of negative space. Through sensuality and a striking pose, she stands at center but off-balance as if straightening her back to project strength.
Luciano Cian creates exciting works which exemplify both design and fashionable tastes. He delves into a vortex and dance of colors which spread across the surface in unpredictable and asymmetrical manners. Through pattern and simplification, Luciano creates portraiture which stylizes his subjects into forms of tone and planes. He breaks down the surface to reveal the complexities which can be achieved by reducing the subject matter into purified shapes and flat tones. Through flatness and design, Luciano creates surfaces which embolden our direct relationship to pop culture with a portrayal of women as icons.
