Virginia Garcia Costa

Virginia Garcia Costa is a painter and relief sculptor who exhibits mostly in Europe in art festivals such as The Other Art Fair in London and features in exhibitions such as Galerie Katapult in Basel, Switzerland. Often featured in various collections on Saatchi Art and Rise Art, curators from both platforms have critically written about her work. She has received notable recognitions from the Embassy of Argentina and first place award at International Art Fair ARTE BINNINGEN in Basel. Virginia’s works remain in collections in Europe, the United States, Canada, Latin America, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East.

The paintings usually convey compositions of thin stripes in perfect symmetry across the surface with bright pastel colors while the relief sculptures have the appearance of flat paintings upon first impression. These reliefs contain shards of painted wood attached to canvas to create various circular and dripping configurations. Holistic in approach, Virginia’s compositions usually contain one solid form with several variations to stretched appearance.

Often using vast portions of negative space, Virginia orchestrates the volume to convey art deco design principles from the very early 20th century. Through geometric drips and half spheres, she creates patterns influenced by natural elements of rain and the sun. In contrast, Virginia’s stripe paintings offer a variation with pop art effects and blocks of canvases symmetrically showing colors streaming in various cubical directions. In both formats, there remains a celebration of art as a layout towards integrating as a symbolic representation of either nature or geometry.

Las aguas del río (pictured above) represents a sun-like or planetary sphere using negative space to indicate the appearance of cloud formations blocking the form. The relief sculpture offers minimalistic tendencies towards recognizing the structure. By simply using curved stripes of negative space within the circle, Virginia creates an impression of the sun. Otherwise, the sculpture would come off simply as an abstract circle without the various formations. Conveying deep art deco design principles, the piece can be described as almost meditative in the pleasing curvature and modest approach.

Virginia Garcia Costa creates intricate sculptural reliefs with small fragmented pieces of materials such as wood to enhance a sense of construct to form. Her stripe paintings communicate pure color appreciation and variation, creating surfaces which delineate outline and holistic compositional presence in space. With sophisticated design, Virginia instills variation between colors such as unnatural colors in the paintings to the relief sculptures containing neutral and gold tones. What connects the works would be the feelings of pleasure and serenity. Virginia Garcia Costa creates inspirational compositions which soothe the spirit similar to listening to the sounds of the rain during the early morning hours.
