Yoni Alter
Yoni Alter is a contemporary sculptor who has exhibited throughout London as well as in Paris and New York City. In addition to his portfolio of sculptures, Yoni has produced a number of permanent public art projects in England. Notable exhibitions in galleries include Kemsitry Gallery, Arkley Fine Art, and Dynamite Gallery and he has participated in various art fairs such as Tokyobike and Jewish Book Week. Yoni’s works have been featured in various books including several editions of Dot Art National Gallery and New York Cityscape Timeline.
Most of Yoni’s sculptures included with the article are made from stainless steel but he also works in other various mediums such as glass and wood. The stainless steel sculptures are formed in such a way to have the appearance of liquified metal in motion, similar to the presence of the T-1000 android in the film Terminator 2. These reflectively polished sculptures twist and turn in seemingly organic postures such as splatters or connotations to figurative structures.
With a pristine finish, these stainless steel constructs perform a subtle interaction with light, creating reflections of the sculpture’s surrounding environment. Smooth and containing great curvature, the pieces communicate drastic forms suspended and frozen in motion. Seemingly organic, the metallic works appear readily interactive as if prepared to lunge upon the viewer or perform an action such as dripping or turning in real-time.
Kiss Me (pictured above) is a glass sculpture which contains various color mirrors which offer reflective qualities similar to Yoni’s stainless steel pieces. Containing a variation of prismatic colors, the subject of a frog becomes almost similar to a mechanical construct as the amphibian becomes represented through carefully constructed triangular and diamond-shaped panels. Although modest in actual size, the frog appears monumental in the sheer luminosity while having the aspect of a large gem, shaped to the whims of an imaginative sculptor.
Yoni Alter creates structures with organic qualities which contain great luminosity because of the chosen material. Such an approach gives great intrinsic value to the sculptures because they are constructed in a way to appear like precious personal items. These forms offer an unnatural and alien approach to sculpture which dive into an imagination based on the subject of action rather than reflecting reality. Yoni implores a playful nature into contemporary practices creating constructs which invoke unrelenting curiosity in the sheer grandeur of reflective qualities. Through the invasion of space containing shifting spherical and angular planes, he connects the audience with his vibrant, rich, and unusual imagination.
